Arlene Weisz & Beverly Black interview practitioners from more than fifty dating violence and sexual assault programs across the United States to provide a unique resource for effective teen dating violence. Their comprehensive approach reveals the core techniques that should be a part of any successful prevention program, including theoretical consistency, which contributes to sound content development, and peer education and youth leadership, which empower participants and keep programs relevant. The authors demonstrate that productive education remains sensitive to differences in culture and sexual orientation and includes experiential exercises and role-playing.

Arlene Weisz joined the faculty of the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in 1995, after a social work career that included practice with adolescents. She researches adult and adolescent partner violence and sexual assault prevention and has co-coordinated and evaluated dating violence and sexual assault prevention programs for middle-school youth and university students.

Beverly Black is a professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington. For several years she co-coordinated and evaluated dating violence and sexual assault prevention programs for adolescents and university students in Detroit, Michigan. After a decade of amassing interviews of women born early in the 1900s, The Old Lesbian Oral Herstory Project (www.olohp.org) has released its first book. A Gift of Age is a retelling of the stories of 22 lesbians, each offering a valuable glimpse into what it was like to be a lesbian during a unique and challenging period in American history.

It's hard to imagine today what it was like for a woman to live in a time when she had never heard the word lesbian, when there were no lesbian organizations, and when she had to be careful what she wore to the bar because a woman could be arrested simply for wearing pants or the wrong shoes. These are just some of the experiences shared in A Gift of Age: Old Lesbian Life Stories.

Some believe women were the first drummers before they were forbidden to play.

In our class, you will learn basic techniques, hand patterns, and  traditional rhythms on the West African djembe drum. You bring the  interest and inhibition, and I will bring the drums and instruction.  Together we will build a drum community. Come and Drum Sista Drum!

Each class is $15 with a part of the proceeds going to the store.  To reserve a drum contact sistadrums@yahoo.com or call the store.
