A DIRECT LINE - Stories in Poetry and Song:
Debra L. Winegarten & Jan Seides in Concert
Award-winning poet, Debra L. Winegarten and award-winning songwriter, Jan Seides team up to provide stories in poetry and song, both ancient and modern.
Debra Winegarten is the author of “There’s Jews In Texas?” which won the Poetica Publishing National Chapbook Contest. A resident of Austin, TX, Winegarten also penned many other books including the award winning young adult biography “Oveta Culp Hobby – Colonel, Cabinet Member, Philanthropist.”, “Katherine Stinson: The Flying School Girl” and Mum’s The Word: A Tribute to Ruthe Winegarten.” She is an ardent supporter of independent feminist bookstores in general and BookWoman in particular. As she mentions in "There's Jews in Texas?", she has perfect pitch, and was told as a child by her Catholic music teacher that it meant she had a direct line to God. Of the award for her book, she says, "The very idea that my little chapbook, “There’s Jews in Texas?” won a national poetry contest — made me go outside and do a little Happy Dance in the back yard."
Award-winning singer/songwriter, Jan Seides (sigh-deez) writes and performs original, lyrics-driven songs that combine uptown sophistication with down-home truth. At this performance, she will be launching her fifth album, a collection of Biblical stories told from the point of view of those unsung heroes, most of them women, who never got a chance to speak. It will be the first time in the spotlight for the entire collection. She says, "Because the Bible and its stories are central to our culture, once I realized there were gaps, I felt compelled to fill them. I do have kind of an inflated sense of responsibility." By an odd coincidence, Seides also has perfect pitch.
