Merlin Stone: “When God Was a Woman”
“At the very dawn of religion, God was a woman. Do you remember?” proclaimed Merlin Stone in her life-changing and history-changing book When God Was a Woman, published in 1976. She followed this book with Ancient Mirrors of Womanhood in 1979, a treasure trove of Goddess poetry and prose from around the world. We will honor and celebrate Merlin Stone, art historian and sculptor and foremother of Goddess spirituality, with excerpts from some of her speeches and writings, as well as information about her life and work from the recently published book of essays about her: Merlin Stone Remembered by David B. Axelrod, Carol F. Thomas, and Lenny Schneir, her life partner. We will have time to reflect on Merlin Stone’s influence on our own spiritual development. Merlin Stone died on Feburary23, 2011.
Kim Osmer, avid book reader, is a long-time collector of Goddess statues and books. She heard MerlinStone speak at the Santa Cruz Goddess Conference in 1978, and Kim will share excerpts from Stone’s speech. Linda Webster has been a member of the Women’s Spirituality Group at the First Unitarian Universalist Church since 1984. Linda first discovered the Goddess in the late 1970s through Merlin Stone’s writings, as well as books by Starhawk and Z. Budapest.
