Author Event: Writing as a Tool for Healing from Sexual Assault
After two women close to her were assaulted, local author JM Buckler witnessed not only the devastation following sexual violence but also the life-altering difference between staying silent or talking openly about the experience. Speaking and writing about the trauma, Buckler came to understand, is essential in releasing it from one’s life and body. And yet, despite advances in the feminist and #metoo movements, there is still a social stigma attached to talking about the experience of assault, and there is still insufficient awareness of the crushing blow and chain reaction that assault causes in one’s life. In her new fantasy fiction novel, Passage of Time, Buckler addresses both these matters, through a strong female character who initially unravels and ultimately heals from sexual assault.
Buckler teams up with Patty Conner – VP of programs at Hope Alliance, an organization working to end sexual violence – for the event, “Writing as a Tool for Healing from Sexual Assault.” Conner will discuss the individual and collective impact of sexual assault; will share tools and resources for healing from the trauma; and will guide participants on how to effectively support someone who has experienced assault. Buckler then will discuss her experience as the friend and relative of women who were assaulted; will share the reason she included sexual assault in her new book; and will talk about writing as a tool for healing from the trauma – providing step-by-step guidance on how to establish a healing writing practice.
