Getting to Know the Goddess: Laughing at the Devil with Julian of Norwich
A Program in BookWoman’s monthly “Getting to Know the Goddess” Series
Laughing at the Devil: Seeing the World with Julian of Norwich
Laughing at the Devil by Amy Laura Hall is an invitation to see the world with a medieval visionary now known as Julian of Norwich, believed to be the first woman to have written a book in English. By “laughing at the Devil,” Julian courageously transformed a time of fear into hope, solidarity, and resistance. Her writings bear witness––at points defiant, at points mischievous––to an all-loving God. How might the mystical visions of Julian of Norwich apply to our world?
Amy Laura Hall’s presentation will be followed by a book signing and a reception. Books are currently available for sale at BookWoman. This program will begin with a brief celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a December tradition at BookWoman.
Amy Laura Hall is Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Duke University Divinity School. She is the author of Kierkegaard and the Treachery of Love; Conceiving Parenthood: American Protestantism and the Spirit of Reproduction; and Writing Home, With Love: Politics for Neighbors and Naysayers.
